Rome, Ga. - Shorter College will host its 2009 football home opener on Saturday, Sept. 12 when it welcomes NCAA Division III LaGrange College to Barron Stadium for a 6 p.m. kick off.
The contest will be the fourth installment of The Battle for the Governor's Cup, with the Hawks trying to maintain their unblemished record in the young series (3-0).
The two teams first met in 2006, LaGrange's first season as a football program, and behind A.J. Cooley's 103 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, Shorter blanked the Panthers 54-0 in LaGrange, Ga.
Shorter claimed a 38-12 victory over the Panthers at Barron Stadium in 2007, and last season needed a Budd Keith interception in the end zone with just moments to play to escape Callaway Stadium with a 28-23 decision.
The Hawks (0-1) are coming off a 21-14 loss at NCAA Division II Lenoir-Rhyne on Aug. 29 and look to get their vaunted running game in gear against LaGrange.
Shorter, owner of the nation's top rushing offense in 2008 at over 300 yards-per-game, was held to 169 yards on the ground in the opener, as preseason All-American Cooley gained just 47 yards on 14 carries.
The Hawks did find offensive relief via the arm of junior signal caller Ben Williams, who threw for a career-high 115 yards and two touchdowns, matching the number of touchdown tosses he had in all of 2008. Cooley was the recipient of an 18-yard scoring strike from Williams and wide receiver Jordan Hazard hauled in a 58-yard TD to spur the offense.
LaGrange enters Saturday's showdown with a 1-0 record after besting Birmingham-Southern, 30-27, last weekend.
Do-it-all running back Mario Wallace finished with 239 all-purpose yards and caught a touchdown pass while quarterback Drew Carter threw for 193 yards and a score to pace the Panthers.
Kicker Josh Stripling nailed a field goal as time expired to give LaGrange the win and connected on 4-of-6 field goal tries on the afternoon.
Fans can catch all of Saturday's action by tuning into 95.7 The Ridge WATG-FM for the Phil Jones Show beginning at 5 p.m. The Ridge will be on site at Barron Stadium throughout the day with live look-ins and build up leading up to kickoff.
