The Shorter College women's softball team left Thursday and traveled to Montgomery, AL in preparation to open their season at the Faulkner Invitational.
The Lady Hawks open their 2009 season this afternoon in a double-header against William Carey University at 12 p.m. and Spring Hill College at 4 p.m.
The Hawks will then continue in the invitational by playing another double-header against the University of Mobile and Thomas University on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Last year the ladies ended up 1-1 at the Faulkner Invitational, with two cancellations (William Carey and Spring Hill). The Lady Hawks beat out Belhaven College 5-1 and lost against the University of Mobile 11-4.
The Hawks have fared well over the past couple of seasons, and plan to do even better this year as they remain optimistic about the season that they have prepared for all year long.
Liz Clark, junior Lady Hawks infielder said, "To be honest we don't really have any predictions because we have a completely different team. However, we are really excited about this upcoming season because we had some great players come in."
All the teams participating in the Faulkner Invitational are hopeful for their team's outcome.
Wendy Hogue, the head coach for women's softball at William Carey University, said, "We hope to fare well, as I'm sure everyone does. It's anyone's game."
The Faulkner Invitational will prove to be a great season opener for the girls as it pits them against their toughest competitor, Mobile, which will prepare them for their conference games.
These girls will have to hit as hard as they can, run as fast as their legs will allow, and catch and field every ball in their path.
However, winning does not come because of the fruits of one person's labors, but from the cohesive efforts of a well tuned team, which is what these ladies have this season.
