Despite the recent blasts of ice-cold weather, the majority of Georgia residents do not get to spend much time in the snow. But some are joining the fun found in North Carolina’s Winter Wonderland.

Shorter College Intramurals is preparing for a high-flying ski trip weekend scheduled at the beginning of February at the Sapphire Valley Ski Resort.

Starting off as just an idea, coordinator of Student Life, Whitney Mosley, talked the idea over with Emily Messer, director of Student Activities, and a plan for the trip developed.

According to Mosley, the purpose of the trip was to “allow students to participate in an activity that is not only fun, but something they can do as individuals. This trip will give the students an opportunity to experience recreational activities other than those only offered ‘On the Hill’ or through our athletic department.”

Mosley and other trip sponsors look forward to the snow-filled adventure in N.C.

“I am very excited about the trip!  I’m happy that we could offer such an activity for the students,” Mosley said.

Fifteen spots were available, but with 14 students already signed up, only one seat remains.

Students attending the trip seem to be excited about the experience.

“I think this is a great opportunity for students to get to know one another and also a chance for people who have never skied or snow boarded before to get a chance to do so at a reasonable price,” said junior and ski trip participant Asa McWhorter.

McWhorter, who is going with two of her friends, Stephanie Boyd and Brittany Dekle, said that this will be an opportunity to bond in a way that they do not usually have time for while at school.

The price of the trip is $175 with a $50 deposit, which includes lodging, transportation, unlimited ski rental, the use of the lifts, a free skiing lesson and some meals free-of-charge.

Two 15-passenger buses will be used for transportation, one for passengers and the other for luggage.

The group will leave on Friday, Feb. 6 and will return on Monday, Feb. 9. While in N.C., the participants will stay at a hotel across the street from the resort.

Despite the many activities planned for them, the group will ultimately have plenty of great opportunities to meet others and explore the slopes.

Even more,  the students will have time to relax, perhaps while cozing by a fireplace after a day of flying down slopes.

If students are interested, they are advised to visit the Office of Student Activities.
