The Shorter College Athletic Department has recently organized a new Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) that is currently comprised of at least one representative from each team at Shorter.

The leadership of the members will focus on improving the lives of student-athletes on campus and in the community.

"Success on the field is great, but success off the field is more important," said senior shot-put and discus thrower and Men's Track and Field representative, Curtis John. "That is the main reason why the board was assembled."

The SAAB consists of athletes from each team and is also run primarily by those athletes. "The members of the board will be the voice of the athletes to communicate the concerns that athletes have to the administration," said senior football player Will Peterson.

Out of Shorter's 475 student-athletes, only 21 members were selected to be on the board.

Athletes received a letter from the Shorter Athletic Department, in which they asked the selected students if they would accept the responsibility of being a member. The letters were sent out after the coaches chose the athletes.

Although the SAAB was created at Shorter, the community will benefit from this organization as well. The members of the board will be participating in community service activities such as going to schools and reading to kids and being mentors for younger student-athletes all around the
Rome area.

All student-athletes are encouraged to speak with their team's representative and get involved in the different projects the board is involved with.

The goals that the SAAB plans on achieving are to "develop a community of student-athletes at Shorter and serve the communities of Rome," said senior sprinter and Women's Track and Field representative, Kianca Dupree.

"As of now, no official meetings have taken place to discuss all of the projects fully, but meetings will be scheduled for the future," said senior and Football representative, Zach Morrison.
