The Shorter College televised radio station SC-49 sponsored "Gig on the Green" Tuesday, kicking off the Homecoming week with the acoustic guitar styling of alumni, Laura Bowen and junior, Haley Smith.

The performers were really excited to be a part of the musical aspect of the Homecoming events that are going on this week.

"It's good to be home and share music with everyone," said Bowen, who graduated from Shorter in December of 2007 and was a prominent performer while attending. "I grew as a musician here, so it's nice to come back and have this opportunity again."

Newer to the Shorter performance scene, Smith said, "Well, I haven't played a lot [at Shorter] at all, and I was asked to play tonight, so the opportunity is good."

The performers also had different purposes of their performances on Tuesday night.

Bowen said, "I have very limited music opportunities now that I've graduated, but I love playing for my [Shorter] family and it's for Homecoming week which I didn't even know was going on this week! Plus, this a good break from the nine to five."

Smith had a different perspective for sharing her music with the crowd.

"I want to minister to people in a non-threatening way and help people come together as Christians and non-Christians."

The overall atmosphere of the concert was a carefree and calm setting with people sitting in the grass while enjoying the music, and, even though a lot of people were not present on the grass, many residents of Van Hoose and Cooper opened their windows to bask in both performances from their own rooms.

Other students played Frisbee on the sidelines to bring more activity to the show, but weren't distracting the show to say the least.

The sets of Bowen and Smith were musically different, even though they both conveyed a great deal of talent.

Smith opened up the show with her whimsical and spiritual music (accompanied by her friend, Rainey). All songs are original and can be found on her album, "OK." Some of the selections were "Everything's OK" and "Lukewarm," in which she described the song as "a song that tells of our struggles with what we want to do in life."

Smith also captivated the crowd with interaction between each song selection.

Bowen proceeded in the performance, as she intrigued the audience with her intelligent lyrics and prevailing voice. Her set included the songs "Simplicity?", "The Smallest Names" and a haunting rendition of "Amazing Grace."

Bowen closed out the show with her life-learning experience song called "Vacancy," just as the sun finally set to close out the day.

Jesus Costilla, a sophomore, said that Bowen's music was "intense and amazing."

Other audience members enjoyed both performances and did not have negative feedback about them.

"I like it; it was cool. Not my kind of music, but this is nice," said sophomore Maici Antwan.

This particular concert definitely portrayed the wide array of talent Shorter College has and will continue to produce.
