In the fall of 2006, one student made it her goal to make St. Jude Children's Research Hospital a student philanthropic project for Shorter College. After filling out proposals and getting her idea approved by Shorter College's Student Government, Nicole Olivera started work on "Up 'til Dawn," an event supporting the patients of St. Jude hospital.
Although a popular and successful campus-wide event, "Up 'til Dawn" is no longer on the list of events for the 2008-2009 school year.
Whitney Mosley, coordinator of Student Life, said, "'Up 'til Dawn' is not gone for good. We are merely taking a year or so off to re-group."
Mosley blames the lack of student involvement for the project's hiatus.
"'Up 'til Dawn' is a 100 percent student-led organization. It takes more than the Executive Council to run it. We just need more help and support from the student body since they are the ones who run it," said Mosley.
She continued, "The office of student activities felt that the organization should take a year off to get a better work base."
Although "Up 'til Dawn" is not an organization right now, the group has made a huge impact for St. Jude.
"Over the past two years, the student lead organization has raised over $30,000 in donations for St. Jude's. The Shorter student body has alone given two thousand dollars, which most[ly] was used to host the main events on campus," Mosley said.
To raise the money, the "Up 'til Dawn" council had to host many events, including, "The all-team meeting" at the beginning of the fundraiser and the finale to end the fundraiser.
Throughout the period of the fundraiser, they also hosted several smaller events, including the Elephants Sales (dorm competitions) and "Jeans for St. Jude's," which gave faculty the opportunity to wear jeans if they donated money. The freshman "Hill Climbers" also hosted a silent auction with money going to St. Jude's.
"St. Jude's was even impressed on how much money we had raised for being such a small school," said Mosley. "I am very proud of everything we have done for St. Jude's. I just wish we had more help."
As of right now, there are no other philanthropies being discussed.
"We are, however, always open to suggestions, opinions and thoughts," said Mosley. "We just have to know that the students will fully support the organization we bring to the hill."
If a student is interested in bringing a certain organization on campus, the student must follow certain procedures. The first step is to take the idea to Emily Messer, director of Student Activities. Once the student gets the approval to move forward with the formation of the organization, the student will then have to meet the organization guidelines set by the Student Government Association.
Refer to the student handbook for more details on developing a student organization.
