"Songs for a New World" will hit the Callaway stage this fall.

The theater department held auditions the week of August 27th to cast the production. The cast only features eight characters, making the auditions more competitive than normal.

The women making the final cast list sophomore Elizabeth Telford and seniors Kate Zaloumes, Hannah Jacobs and Katie Northcutt. The male cast includes seniors Doront'e Evans, William Lucas, John Mark Jernigan and junior Michael Lindsey.

The show will be a collaboration of the old and new faculty and staff.

Lucas said, "…I am thrilled to be working on this show with two new faculty members, Dr. Diane Montgomery and Ms. April Hill, as well as with the always wonderful Ms. Georgie Hall. We have a wonderful cast and crew and I couldn't be more excited to start a new year off with such a terrific show."

In an email interview, Hill said, " I have high expectations for 'Songs for a New World' and for this cast. This is a great show that we all love and want to do it justice. The music is quite difficult, so it will be a challenge for us all!"

"Songs for a New World" is known as a "song cycle," consisting mostly of songs with little dialogue and no consistent plot. The main characters all live their own lives with almost no relation to each other.

Hill said, "It is a revue, which means it is all music, no spoken dialogue outside of a few lines in the songs here and there. The style of the music is very contemporary and will be accompanied by keyboard, electric bass and drums. One of our amazing students, Jonathan Parks is on keyboard, and our own Dr. Sam Baltzer will be playing bass. You don't want to miss this one!"

The show takes the audience on a journey through time and all emotions.
The characters all range in age, life experience and even location, only sharing one thing: their desire for change within their lives.

The audience will experience the fears of pilgrims on a boat traveling to the new world, discouraged but hopeful. Throughout the production, the audience sees everything from a woman suffering through a loveless marriage, to a young man from the Bronx aspiring to be a basketball star.
