After a job in the design industry failed to come through, Shorter College Alumna Misti Freeman decided to turn her passion for painting into dollars and cents.

By freelancing her work to Atlanta-area businesses and families, Freeman found productivity in her post-collegiate life.

"A job is almost never simply handed to you; it is something you have to seek out and pursue with everything you have," said the young entrepreneur, who graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in fine art and a minor in business administration.

With her paintings hanging on the walls of coffee shops, home furnishing stores and dentist offices, Freeman realizes life after graduation is anything but easy.

"As a full-time artist you have to be more of a salesman than a painter," she said. "It takes dedication and hard work to get your name known."

Freeman could be speaking on behalf of college graduates everywhere. Current job hunters are experiencing a market of increasing competitiveness, said Peter Vogt, a monster.com career coach. "[Today] the bachelor's degree won't land you a job by itself," he said.

Monster.com, the self-proclaimed leader in online global careers networking, is one of countless internet-based search agents to aid job seekers. The Web site contains job searches, résumé workshops, networking services and career advisors to help seekers land a successful job.

Terri Cordle, director of student support services, said monsterTRAK.com is the most beneficial search agent for Shorter students. As an offshoot of monster.com, monsterTRAK focuses on college students by linking employers with current students, graduates and career centers.

By using the password "hawks" and then selecting "Shorter College" as the affiliate organization, students can search job listings with a specific focus that other services lack.

Students can also find help on campus by taking advantage of the many opportunities Cordle offers. She teaches résumé writing and interviewing workshops, as well as a senior seminar class on career professionalism. The course covers everything from job outlook to dining etiquette and prepares seniors for the road ahead with mock interviews.
